PHOENIX -- Paul Goldschmidt seems to hit whatever Tim Lincecum throws at him. So does Aaron Hill. Neither one is about to question why. Theyre just going to enjoy the success while it lasts. Hill drove in two runs, and Goldschmidt had two hits off Lincecum, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks send the San Francisco Giants to their sixth straight loss, 4-1 on Friday night. "You dont want to take it lightly because baseball can turn at any moment," said Hill, who is 11 for 19 against Lincecum. "He is a great pitcher and had a great career, and you dont want to make it sound like its easy. Hes a great pitcher and its not easy." The Giants still lead the NL West, but have lost nine of 10 to see a lead that was once 9 1-2 games dwindle to less than four. The last-place Diamondbacks extended San Franciscos misery behind a gritty effort by Josh Collmenter (5-4) and by knocking around Lincecum (5-5). Hill had run-scoring hits in the fourth and fifth innings, and Goldschmidt had a single and double to raise his average to .577 against the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Collmenter fought through five innings to win for the first time in four starts. Arizonas bullpen picked it up from there. Three pitchers worked scoreless innings, and Addison Reed had a perfect ninth to close out his 17th save. It was Arizonas third win in 10 games and another frustrating loss in what is becoming a long stream of them for the Giants. "Its been that way here through this tough streak," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We are missing the big hit, kind of keep the line moving. We had some great at-bats, stretched him (Collmenter) out, but he dodged some bullets there." Collmenter had lost two straight starts, allowing six runs in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers his last time out. The right-hander laboured through his night, needing 31 pitches to get through the first. Pablo Sandoval had a run-scoring triple in the inning, chugging his way around the bases after centre fielder Ender Inciarte just missed a diving catch in the gap. Collmenter continued to run up his pitch count, yet found ways to wriggle out of jams. He walked two in the fifth inning and got out of that by striking out Sandoval and getting Michael Morse to fly out to deep centre. Collmenter allowed a run and four hits, struck out four and walked four while throwing a season-high 109 pitches. "I just continued to battle," Collmenter said. "I dont think Ive ever had a clean, crisp outing against these guys for whatever reason. But I felt as good as I have in the last few starts and was able to make some good pitches." Lincecum was solid in his previous two starts, allowing five combined runs after giving up eight against Cincinnati on June 3. Like Collmenter, he struggled. Unlike Collmenter, he didnt always get out of it. Arizona scored two runs off the right-hander in the fourth inning, on Hills single and a double by Martin Prado. Arizona added a run in the fifth on a run-scoring triple by Chris Owings, who was thrown out at the plate while trying for an inside-the-park homer. Hill made it 4-1 with a sacrifice fly that scored Goldschmidt, who improved to 15 for 26 against Lincecum with his second hit of the night, a double off the wall in left-centre. Lincecum allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings. "I left too many pitches over the plate, and you saw what they did with them," Lincecum said. TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona knocked off some quality opponents, rolled over a few overmatched ones and grinded out victories even when things didnt go so well. The Wildcats werent perfect during their non-conference season, but their record was and thats all that matters to them. Nick Johnson scored 20 points, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 14 and top-ranked Arizona rolled over Northern Arizona 77-44 on Monday night to complete its second straight undefeated non-conference slate. "Were good, but we can get a lot better," Johnson said. "Hey, 13-0, well take that. Now weve just got to get ready for conference." The Wildcats appear to be in good shape after their latest rout against an overmatched opponent. Arizona (13-0) played its second straight game without injured centre Kaleb Tarczewski, but didnt really need him, grabbing control with a 27-4 first-half run. Johnson got the run started and Hollis-Jefferson provided a spark starting in place of Tarczewski, grabbing eight rebounds while hustling all over the floor. Brandon Ashley added 11 points and nine rebounds, Gabe York had 10 points and four steals, and T.J. McConnell had six assists in Arizonas 27th straight non-conference win. One of the nations best defensive teams all season, the Wildcats did their most damage on that end, holding Northern Arizona (3-8) to 36 per cent shooting while scoring 18 points off 23 turnovers. An overwhelming No. 1 the past two weeks, Arizona should stay atop the polls at least one more week with its next game not until Jan. 2 against Washington State. "Being the No. 1 team in the country, you can carry it as a burden and take all of the negative connotations that you want," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. "On the flip side, weve really embraced the fact that were the No. 1 team in the country. You cant take it from us. We earned it." Northern Arizona is plenty familiar with trip south, playing in Tucson every season but one since 2002. It hasnt gone too well for the Lumberjacks. Other than a five-point game in 2010, Arizona has beaten Northern Arizona in routs, including a 93-50 runaway last season. The Lumberjacks faced an even bigger hill this time around. Northern Arizona had a huge setback just before the season started, when sophomore guard Dwayne Russell, the teams top returning scorer, decided to transfer. The Lumberjacks managed to play close games against Southern California and Fresno State, but those teams are nothing like what they were up against at the McKale Center. Arizona had rolled through its non-conference schedule to this point, knocking off teams like Duke and Michigan to move atop The Associated Press poll two weeks ago. Northern Arizona held its own while Arizona struggled on offence early on, playing to an 11-all tie with the Wildcats in the opening 8 minutes. Arizona turned into a rout after that, scoring 17 straight points during its big run to go up 38-15. Johnson keyed it, hitting consecutive 3-pointers at the start and adding another to put the Wildcats up 15. The junior guard had 14 points by halftime to help Arizona to a 41-17 lead. Northern Arizona had two field goals over the final 10 minutes and shot 7 of 19 from the floor. Worse for the Lumberjacks, they had no assists in the half and 12 turnovers that led to 18 points for Arizona. "We had too many turnovers and thats what killed us," Northern Arizona forward Gaellan Bewernick said. "Valuing the ball is the biggest thing for us right now." Taking it away is the top priority for the Wildcats and theyve proven to be pretty good at it. Arizona is long, athletic, versatile and, usually has a 7-foot anchor in Tarczewski. The Wildcats entered Mondays game seventh nationally in scoring defence, allowing 57.8 points per game, and eighth in shooting percentage against at 37.3 Even without Tarczewski to contend with, the Lumberjacks were no match for Arizona. Let by Johnson and McConnell out top, the Wildcats hounded Northern Arizona into turnovers, difficult shots and made it tough for the Lumberjacks to even run their offence. Arizona keyed its big first-half run with defence and didnt really let up until the game was well out of hand in the second half. Northern Arizona had four assists and failed to get a player in double-figures scoring to become the third opponent in four games to be held under 50 points by Arizona. "Best defensive team Ive seen in a long time," said NAU coach Jack Murphy, a former manager under Lute Olson at Arizona. "Defensively, theyre better than any team when I was here. Their length, they guard pick and rolls, motion and they limit you to one shot. They defend." And win, at least to this point. No matter what, they can always count on David West. With the top-seeded Pacers poised for an early summer, West fearlessly led a 16-4 run to end the game, extending the season with a 95-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night. "Hes our rock," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "Theres no other way to put it." Trailing 3-2 after losing at home for the second time in the best-of-seven series, Indiana was in big trouble when the Hawks pushed out to an 84-79 lead with just over 3 minutes remaining, cheered on by a raucous crowd that barely sat down in the second half. But, for the fourth time in this back-and-forth affair, the road team won. West seemed to make every big play down the stretch, scoring four straight points and forcing a huge turnover to begin the turnaround. He hit two more baskets in the final minute to wrap things up, finishing with 24 points. Game 7 is Saturday in Indianapolis. "When a team is making runs like that, an eight seed trying to knock off a one seed in their building and the place is erupting on every play, we have a guy with the composure to settle everyone down," Vogel said. Paul George also scored 24 points for the Pacers, making four straight free throws to help fend off a team that was trying to become only the sixth No. 8 seed to win a playoff series. The Pacers went with a smaller-than-usual lineup much of the game, hoping to match up better with Atlanta spreading the court and shooting a bunch of 3-pointers. Roy Hibbert remained the starting centre, but played only about 12 minutes for the second game in a row. Ian Mahinmi played nearly twice as long, giving Indiana more mobility in the lane, while C.J. Watson and Chris Copeland also got extensive minutes. It worked. Atlanta bogged down offensively and made only 9-of-35 from beyond the arc. "We tried some different lineups," West said. "Coach rolled the dice." West came up big all over the court, also leading the Pacers with 11 rebounds and six assists, not to mention a couple of steals. "I told the guys, If worse comes to worse, weve got to play park baskeetball," he said.dddddddddddd Atlanta, playing perhaps its biggest home playoff game since the 1980s, looked as if it was on the verge of a huge celebration when the defence sagged and Jeff Teague knocked down a jumper with 3:16 to go. But, led by West, the Pacers showed some of the resolve theyve lacked in a late-season swoon. After swishing a pair of free throws, he hustled back to swat the ball away from Atlantas Pero Antic. Making sure Indiana took advantage of the turnover, West calmly made a jumper from the top of the key. Paul Millsap missed at the other end, and George Hill burst into the lane to drop one in. Just like that, the Pacers were back up 85-84 with 1:58 remaining. Antic tied it for the final time, 85-all, on a free throw with 1:24 remaining. But that was it for the Hawks. West hit another jumper to put the Pacers ahead for good. Then, coming off a timeout, Lou Williams drove under the basket and tried to throw an outlet pass to Teague; instead, the ball went right to George. He was immediately fouled, made both free throws, and Teague missed again for the Hawks after a brilliant night to seal it for the Pacers. Teague scored 29 points, nearly pulling out a victory on a night when Atlanta shot just under 36 per cent. "Nobodys going to lay down and just allow their season to be over with," Williams said. "Especially with the type of basketball team that they are. I think they just did a great job of just fighting at that three-minute mark and made the plays that we didnt." The bruising series nearly turned ugly near the end of the first half. Scott doled out an elbow to Hill, and the Pacers guard responded with a shove. The refs jumped in quickly and no punches were thrown. After initially calling a foul on Hill, the officials got together and changed it to Scott. The crowd booed lustily, but it appeared to be the correct call. Replays appeared to show a couple of Indiana players stepping beyond the bench area, but they didnt get involved and Vogel said he didnt expect any discipline from the league for Game 7. Notes: Millsap and Williams were the only other Atlanta players in double figures, both with 16 points. ... Lance Stephenson scored 21 points for the Pacers. ... WINNIPEG -- Canadas Olympic curlers will compete in the Continental Cup, which starts Thursday in Las Vegas. Winnipegs Jennifer Jones, the Canadian womens skip, is looking forward to the event. "It will be great to go back and start competing," she said Tuesday. "A lot of the teams there will be going to the Olympics so its a great event, the Continental Cup. "Its kind of a loose event so we can go and get some games under our belt." Not that Joness rink hasnt been training hard. The squad just returned from Edmonton where it was preparing for the Olympics. "Were prepared," she said. "We had a really good plan going into the trials and I feel we have an even better plan heading into the Olympics. "Were feeling great about everything." Canadas mens team headed by Brad Jacobs will also be there, along with Winnipegs Jeff Stoughton and Ottawas Rachel Homan. Theyll be playing for North America with U.S. Olympic hopefuls Erika Brown and John Shuster. Five of the six teams competing for Team World in Las Vegas will also be at the Olympics: Scotlands David Murdoch and Eve Muirhead, Niklas Edin and Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden and Norways Thomas Ulsrud. And when they do both, they can make beating even a good team look easy. Taj Gibson scored 21 points, Carlos Boozer added 15 points and 13 rebounds, and the Bulls used a big third-quarter run to win for the seventh time in eight games, pounding the Golden State Warriors 103-83 Wednesday night. Jimmy Butler scored 16 points after missing two games with bruised ribs, Mike Dunleavy Jr. added 15, and Joakim Noah grabbed 17 rebounds for Chicago. The Bulls dominated on the glass 56-41, forced 16 turnovers and held All-Star Stephen Curry in check while bringing Golden States four-game win streak to an emphatic end. "I thought we were playing well before the break, and as a group, we talked about continuing to keep it going after the break," Boozer said. "Nows the time to step on the gas pedal and really get ready for the playoffs." The Bulls hit the 100-point mark for the third time in four games and shut down a high-scoring team in the process. Jordan Crawford scored 16 points, but it was a rough night for the Warriors even though David Lee returned to the rotation. He came off the bench to score 11 points in 20 minutes after being hospitalized with a stomach flu and missing two games. "Timing was a little off," Lee said. "I was definitely more winded quicker than I would have been. Twenty minutes felt like about 55 minutes tonight on the court, but that usually is going to happen the first game back. Im glad I got that under my belt and Im ready for the next one." Curry, meanwhile, tied a season low with five points on 2-of-10 shooting with Kirk Hinrich guarding him and the Warriors never found a rhythm. "He always seems to keep a hand on you and never really gives a beat when his help isnt there," Curry said. "Hes very consistent at funneling you where they want you to go. Tonight it was even difficult to get him off-balance and going the opposite way. They made adjustments from the first game (a home win over the Bulls on Feb. 6), and we were just a step slow on making our adjustments iin the game.dddddddddddd They just outplayed us from start to finish." The Warriors trailed by 11 at the half and were within eight in the third quarter when things got out of hand. Dunleavy blocked Andre Iguodalas layup with 7:33 left to send the Bulls were on their way. Hinrich converted a three-point play, igniting a 14-2 run that sealed this one for Chicago. Butler stole a pass by Lee, leading to a layup for Boozer, and scored on a putback that made it 66-51 with 5:52 remaining. After Dunleavy hit a free throw, Boozer capped the run with three straight baskets -- a 15-footer, a short jumper and a 13-foot bank shot -- that bumped Chicagos lead to 73-53 with 3:20 to go in the quarter. Afterward, Hinrichs defence against one of the leagues top scorers drew heavy praise. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged Curry missed a few shots he normally makes but was quick to praise his veteran guard. "You never can measure his true value if you go by statistics," Thibodeau said. "If you go by what he is doing for your team, setting the tone for the defence with his ball pressure, his hustle plays, first to the floor, running your team -- the things he does, it really ignites and inspires your team. And he plays to win. I think that its never lost on his teammates, and its certainly not lost on the coaches or the organization." NOTES: Bulls star Derrick Rose has started running as he tries to work his way back from another season-ending knee injury, although Thibodeau said a return to practice remains a long way off. "Nowhere close to practicing," he said. "Hes doing some running. Hes off the treadmill. Still on it at some times, but his full weight now, and doing lateral slides and things like that. Nowhere near practicing or anything like that." He also reiterated that Rose will not return this season. ... Warriors coach Mark Jackson praised Thibodeau, who was an assistant to Jeff Van Gundy when Jackson played for the New York Knicks. "He was a guy you knew was going to be a very good coach," Jackson said. "Worked his tail off and was committed to his craft. Im very happy for him." cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

LOUDON, N.H. -- Brad Keselowski had a couple of impressive performances at New Hampshire. Its the victory celebration that again gave him fits. Keselowski topped all the fields Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, including a dominant run in his Nationwide Series victory. Keselowski also led the speed charts during both Sprint Cup practices. Throw in the pole for the Nationwide race and that made the Team Penske driver a neat 4 for 4. Simply perfect. "Well a hell of a Saturday," Keselowski said. His only hiccup came when he dropped the American flag out of his No. 22 Ford. The flag rested on the track before it was retrieved by an official to let the victory celebration continue. "It was really windy and my hands been sore," he said. "I took my hand off the flag for the second and the wind ripped it out. It wasnt one of my prouder moments." Keselowski still needs work on his victory laps. He needed four stitches to close a wound he received during his Victory Lane celebration in the Sprint Cup race at Kentucky. He tried to open the bottle of champagne by hitting it against a podium, and the bottle broke and cut his hand. Keselowski led 153 of the 200 laps in his second Nationwide win of the season. He also won at Phoenix and hasnt finished worse than third in six races this season. "I enjoy this series and feel lucky I am allowed to compete in it," he said. He is a star off the track, as well -- Keselowski appears as himself Tuesday on the "Sullivan & Son" show on TBS. Kyle Busch avoided disaster late in the race when he connected with James Buescher trying to make an outside pass and finished second. He starts on the pole for Sundays Cup race. Matt Kenseth, Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher completed the top five. Regan Smith was seventh and won $100,000 in the first event in the four-race "Dash 4 Cash" program that could award up to $1 million to a series regular. Smith, the series points leader, was presented with an oversized check on pit road and joked he wanted to make an immediate bank deposit. "We struggled in traffic more than we needed to and I guess weve got to figure that out soon because weve got a championship race here," Smith said. "The side note today is the $100,000." NEW YORK, N.Y. - Henrik Lundqvist wasnt happy going into Game 6 against Montreal. Given the hook midway through the previous game of the Eastern Conference final, the US$100-million-plus Rangers goalie had been doing a lot of soul-searching. "You have so many highs. You have a few lows where youre questioning a lot of things, but then you just have to make up your mind," Lundqvist said after Thursdays 1-0 series-clinching win over Montreal. "You cant have any excuses. You just have to go out there. "I kept telling myself all day, believe in what youre doing. Ive been in that spot before. It gets silly, you get pulled. You have a tough game, but you just have to stay confident." The mental review concluded, Lundqvist returned to world-class form. In dispatching the Canadiens to win the series four games to two, Lundqvist only had to deal with 18 shots. There were stretches of inactivity for the stylish Swede but he had to be razor sharp on a couple of occasions. Lundqvist, in 20 playoff games this season, leads the NHL with a .928 save percentage and ranks second with a 2.03 goals-against average. New York will need more of the same in the Stanley Cup final. "He was totally focused," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said of his goalie. "He was probably a little upset tonight coming into the game. I dont know if it was because of the opportunity or if he was upset with the way it ended in Montreal in Game 5. "But he was definitely focused, and those are not easy games to play. I mean, there is not a lot of work, but youve got to stay sharp. He stayed really sharp." The biggest save came in the second period off Thomas Vanek. It was an amazing circus-like save with his arm and then blocker as Lundqvist, who lost his stick in the process, corkscrewed his body to stop the close-range shot that deflected off a diving defenceman. Asked what he thought of the play, Vigneault replied: "Same thing you did. Wow." The Rangers scored soon after to book a ticket to their first Cup final in 20 years. When the final whistle blew, the normally ice-cool Lundqvist threw his arms up in the air and pumped them in celebration, before being mobbed by his teammates as New York celebrated its 11th trip to the final. The Rangers will open the championship series next Wednesday in either Chicago or Los Angeles. "Its going to be a great challenge," said Lundqvist before knowing the identity of his opponent. "Were going to play against a really good team. Its about, for us, in the room to remind each other that this is such a special moment that you have to grab it. You have to make sure youre ready and play your absolute best. "Youre not going to get that many opportunities. Ive been here for nine years. This is my first final, and now its all about preparing the right way and try to leave it all out there." In front of Lundqvist, the Rangers can roll four lines. Vigneault started the fourth line of Dominic Moore, Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett against the Habs in Game 6 and they responded with the lone goal on the night. The goal came through nose-to-the-grindstone resolve as the Rangers outworked a tired Montreal quintet to keep the puck in the Habs end. Left alone behind the goal, Boyle sent a perfect pass through defenceman Francis Bouillon and Moore snapped a shot past Dustin Tokarski on the stick side. The Rangers rely on goaltending and penalty killing to limit the opposition offence. Its a recipe that worked well against Montreal, other than Game 5 when Lundqvist was pulled after giving up four goals on 19 shots. New York also has speed in the form of Carl Hagelin, Mats Zuccarello and others. There are Cup winners in Brad Richards and Martin St. Louis. And first-class defencemen in Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi. There is character galore. Moore and St. Louis have had to endure personal tragedies in recent time, but found refuge at the rink, according to Vigneault. The team is well-drilled and does the little things well, although there was a tendency to take poor penalties against Montreal. Behind the bench, Vigneault is a calming presence. In a year that saw the Rangers wobble out of the starting gate, forced to play on the road for most of October due to Madison Square Garden renovations, Vigneault kept the train on the tracks while changing the team culture. Lundqvist also endured a rocky start, going 8-11 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in his first 20 games. "We did change a lot of things going into the season. I think it was a time where we had to find ourselves a little bit as a group," the goalie said. "But personally, I think it was my toughest start in my career, my 12, 13 years as a pro, if I combine the Sweden years. "So its definitely a tough test. But it feels better when you turn it around and good things start to happen. Its been a great ride so far, especially the second half of the season. Its been a lot of fun to be around the guys, thats for sure." Lundqvist, in the final year of a six-year, US$41.25 million deal, signed a seven-year contract extension worth US$59.5 million that will make him the NHLs highest-paid goalie. The win that moved the Rangers into the final came a year to the day that New York fired fiery coach John Tortorella, who is worlds apart from Vigneault. "I personally just like how calm he is," Lundqvist said of Vigneault. "Obviously, he changed a lot the way we play, so it was a big change early on in training camp and the first couple months for us to adjust and for me to adjust. It was a little different game. But he was very patient and calm and understood the process for us to get there. Its going to take a while to get there. "But obviously having Tortorella for almost five years and having that coaching style and then A.V. comes in, theyre opposites. As a player, you learn from both, and I enjoy both. But its refreshing when you see a new coaching style that you havent had before and the way he handles pressure situations. ... Hes pretty consistent with the way he talks to us good or bad." Vigneault is the picture of calm, although he is no automaton. "Yeah, he gets worked up. Hes a human being, and hes a coach," said Richards. "Coaches have to do things sometimes to get things going. But his worked up is different than other peoples worked up. Different from my worked up and your worked up, everybody has different ways of showing it. "I think youve just got to be around it and be behind closed doors, and youll know when he wants a little more of a practice or a little more preparation or whatever hes doing. He still sets the tone when you see him that day, if things need to be changed or need to be worked on." Colin Cole . PHILADELPHIA -- Domonic Brown took a hop and skip out of the batters box, made an exaggerated bat flip, stutter-stepped around first base like Rickey Henderson, and exchanged a choreographed hand shake with Ryan Howard at the plate followed by a semi-bow. If he keeps hitting like this, Brown can be as flashy as he wants. Brown hit his eighth homer in eight games to back Kyle Kendricks six-hitter, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 7-2 Monday night. "Im not really big on numbers," Brown said. "I watch my at-bats every day, see which ones are good and try to keep improving." Delmon Young and Erik Kratz also went deep for the Phillies. Brown, the NL player of the month for May, continued his torrid hitting by going 3 for 4. He had 12 homers and 25 RBIs last month, and already has connected twice and driven in six runs in June. "In the last two or three weeks, hes put a lot of energy in our game," manager Charlie Manuel said. Kendrick (6-3) retired his last 15 batters and beat the Marlins for the 12th time in 14 decisions. He lowered his ERA to 3.12 with his second complete game of the season and fourth in his career. The Phillies trailed 2-0 before scoring three in the fifth and chasing Tom Koehler (0-4) with four in the sixth. Kratz led off the fifth with a shot that barely cleared the wall in left-centre. One out later, Kendrick ripped a liner to centre and hustled into third with a headfirst dive for his first career triple. Ben Reveres RBI single tied it at 2. Revere was 2 for 21 before the hit. Revere stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Rob Brantly and scored on Cesar Hernandezs RBI groundout that gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead. It was the first career RBI for Hernandez. Brown extended the lead to 5-2 with a two-run shot in the sixth. He leads the NL with 17 homers, and certainly isnt lacking confidence. The 25-year-old outfielder is starting to show more swagger with each drive out of the ballpark. "Thats just an inside thing with me and Ryan," Brown said of his celebration with Howard. "Im not going to get into it." The lanky left fielder has eight homers, 15 RBIs and has raised his average from .257 to .291 during an eight-game hitting streak. Ryan Webb replaced Koehler and gave up a long homer to Young. Freddy Galvis tripled and scored on Kendricks grounder to make it 7-2. The last-place Marlins were coming off their first sweep of the season, over the New York Mets, and were seeking their first four-game winning streak. They jumped ahead 2-0 in the third on RBI singles by Derek Dietrich and Marcell Ozuna. Then, it was all Phillies. "It was a good game for the first four innings," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Then they put some good at-bats together and we couldnt hold them down." NOTES: Phillies 3B Michael Young was back after missing five games to tend to his 9-month-old son, who was hospitalized. "Relentless defence wins in any sport," he said after watching the hard-hitting, opportunistic Seahawks stymie the Broncos and their high-octane offence. Casey didnt have to say much as he and his team watched Seattles dominant Super Bowl victory from their Salt Lake City hotel Sunday night. The message had already been engrained into the mindset of his players and stuck with them in Utah the following evening. "We cant control if our shots go in, we cant make every shot but we can control when we play hard on the defensive end," DeMar DeRozan said after holding Utah to 41 per cent shooting in a 94-79 win over the Jazz Monday. "Were understanding that more and more every game." Again, the Raptors got off to a slow start on the defensive end, something that plagued them in Portland Saturday as their comeback bid eventually fell short. The Jazz shot 50 per cent and scored 27 points, closing out the opening quarter with a three-point lead before Toronto tightened the screws in the second frame. Utah scored just 17 points in the second quarter, shooting 35 per cent from the field, 0-of-7 from three-point range and was held without a single assist. The Jazz didnt score more than 18 points in any quarter after the first. "Thats an issue with our team," Casey said before the game. "For whatever reason we turn up the intensity after halftime. I dont know if they like hearing me go ballistic at halftime." "Its one of our unfortunate traits, I would say, but again well take [the win]." The Raptors resiliency was tested again as Kyle Lowry - fresh off being named Eastern Conference Player of the Month - left for the locker room late in the third quarter to get treatment on a sore right knee. Lowry has been the teams most consistent contributor but seemed off his game, shooting 1-for-8 in 25 minutes before he was ruled out for the fourth quarter. The good news is the injury doesnt appear to be a serious one. Lowry has been battling soreness in the knee for about a week, playing through it and playing well, but on Monday he couldnt get it loose. "I couldnt help my team as much as I wanted to," said Lowry, who expects to play in Sacramento on Wednesday. "I trust my teammates would get the job done and thats what they did tonight." Torontos depth and team chemistry came through with Lowry on the sideline. Greivis Vasquez, who returned from a bout of the flu, stepped in at the point and scored 12 off the bench. Amir Johnson - playing on a sore right ankle - looked better, recording a double-double. Jonas Valanciunas had one of his better games in a tough matchup against Enes Kanter and John Salmons chipped in with 13 off the bench. As it has beenn when one Raptor struggles or gets hurt, the next man steps up.dddddddddddd "Thats what it is, I think were playing for each other," Vasquez said. "I want Kyle to get healthy, I want the best for each and every one of us so thats important, man. When you have a team that has such a great atmosphere in the locker room, that care about each other, its going to be scary." Most importantly, it was the defensive effort that carried them to their sixth win over the last eight games. Casey preaches it every day and his troops have all bought in. Theyve seen how far it can take them. "The good thing about it is our players were talking about it last night watching the [Super Bowl]," said the Raptors coach. "Our guys were talking about how [the Seahawks] were hitting people and thats what Ive been preaching and am preaching, hit first." "Basketball-wise, its a little bit different but you can be aggressive for 48 minutes, take away options, take away passing lanes, bump cutters, box out [and] hit people coming for rebounds." Casey, an assistant with the Sonics for 11 years, resides in Seattle during the offseason and was invited to visit the Seahawks training camp a couple summers ago, where he - along with Blazers coach and good friend Terry Stotts - got the opportunity to watch Pete Carroll at work. The takeaway for Casey was to fully embrace and stay true to his philosophy as a head coach. "[Carroll is] a guy thats comfortable in his skin and Im at that point in my career too," he said. "In his first couple of tries he tried to do it the way the organization wanted to do it and he was trying to please everybody. I think you have to coach to your personality and to the personality of your team and thats what he conveyed to [Stotts] and I when we met with him" That philosophy - defence first, second and third - has been hammered home since day one and the results are beginning to reflect it. Entering Mondays games the Raptors ranked sixth in defensive efficiency, just behind the leagues heavy hitters (Indiana, Chicago, Golden State, Oklahoma City and San Antonio). On Monday they surrendered just 79 points, matching the second lowest total theyve given up all year. "I dont care who is playing, when you play the Utah Jazz, its a brand of basketball thats very difficult," Casey said. "Youre going to have to grind it out, youre going to have to earn every inch, every yard in this place and we did tonight." "The rest of the way, before the [All-Star] break, were going to have to grind it out mentally and physically," he continued. "Thats how its going to be because people are going to come out throwing haymakers at us and weve got to be physically and mentally prepared for it." On the season, theyre now 22-6 when holding teams under 100 points. Theyre 20-4 when opponents shoot below 45 per cent. cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

Now, Pat LaFontaine. A day after trading their star goalie to St. Louis, the Buffalo Sabres lost another face of their franchise after LaFontaine abruptly resigned as president of hockey operations on Saturday a little more than three months after being brought in to provide a new direction to the NHLs last-place team. The Sabres announced the decision in a news release issued after speculation had been raised of a potential front-office shake-up involving LaFontaine. "I would like to thank Pat for all he has done for the organization," Sabres owner Terry Pegula said in the release. "Pat joined us at a very difficult time, and helped transition the organization down a new path." The Sabres said LaFontaine would be returning to his previous role working with the National Hockey League. LaFontaine had been working with the league on player safety issues before being hired by the Sabres in mid-November. The former Sabres captains arrival was hailed as a major turning point for a struggling team. LaFontaine took over following a change in the front office during which general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston were dismissed following the Sabres 4-15-1 start. LaFontaines first move was hiring former Sabres coach Ted Nolan to take over as coach on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. LaFontaines next step came in January, when he hired Tim Murray as general manager. "Terry Pegula hired me in November, and my primary objective was to lead the Sabres organization through a time of transition," LaFontaine said in the Sabres release. "Im proud of what weve been able to accomplish in a short period of time, and want to thank Terry and Kim Pegula for the opportunity and their support during my time with the Sabres." LaFontaines resignation still comes as a major surprise. In January, LaFontaine talked openly about how he would use his connections to USA Hockey in a bid to lure national and international events to Buffalo. He leaves a day after Murray made his first big splash by trading star goalie Ryan Miller and captain Steve Ott to the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, the Sabres acquired goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a 2015 first-round pick and a connditional 2016 third-round pick in a deal reached in advance of the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday.dddddddddddd The Sabres (18-34-8) had the day off on Saturday, and return to practice on Sunday before travelling to play at Dallas on Monday. They remain in last place, but are enjoying their first three-game winning streak following a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. This is not the first time LaFontaine has abruptly stepped down as an NHL team executive. In July 2006, LaFontaine quit the New York Islanders a little over a month after being brought in to serve as senior adviser to owner Charles Wang. In Buffalo, LaFontaines absence was notable this week once the team returned to the ice following the leagues Olympic break. He was not spotted in the press box during the Sabres three-game homestand that began with a 3-2 win over Carolina on Tuesday. That was unusual because LaFontaine had previously spent time watching games from the press-box level in Pegulas box, alongside Murray and several of the owners associates. LaFontaine also missed the teams "Power Play Luncheon" for fans on Friday, when he was scheduled to speak along with fellow former Sabres greats Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Danny Gare. The crowd was informed LaFontaine had the flu. The Sabres have become a top-heavy organization since Regiers dismissal. Pegula created the position of president of hockey operations to hire LaFontaine. And Pegula did so only after LaFontaine declined a chance to become the GM by saying he didnt think he had enough experience for that job. Along with hiring Murray, the Sabres also brought in Hockey Hall of Fame member and long-time executive Craig Patrick to serve as a special adviser. LaFontaine backed the hiring of Murray and Patrick, by referring to both as his "wingers." He also discussed how important it was for him to be building a front-office team that could work together in rebuilding a team that has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and not won a playoff round since reaching the 2007 Eastern Conference finals. Its not clear what effect LaFontaines departure will have on the teams short-term future, including Nolans status. Murray said this week hes already had discussions with Nolan about extending his contract beyond this season. cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

NEW ORLEANS -- Tyreke Evans hit the final shot. Jrue Holiday made every big play before that to put the New Orleans Pelicans in position to win. Evans sank a mid-range, pull-up jumper with 1.2 seconds left, and Holiday scored 15 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Pelicans beat the Portland Trail Blazers 110-108 on Monday night. Holiday, acquired in a draft-night trade with Philadelphia last June, connected on seven shots in the fourth when the score was tied or New Orleans led by two or fewer points. He also tied his season high for assists with 13. "I was just being aggressive," he said. "They were backing off on the screen-and-roll where I had the guard behind him, and I had a lot of confidence in my shot. I just felt good and it came at a good time." Evans big basket came right after Portlands Damian Lillard, who has hit several game-winners this season, made a contested 3-pointer to tie the score at 108. New Orleans, which won its fourth in a row at home, never trailed in the second half but never led by more than five in the final 10 minutes. Anthony Davis added 27 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Evans had 20 points, getting his first eight baskets in the lane before making his first jump shot at the end. The opportunity came after Holiday pushed the ball up the court instead of calling a timeout when Lillards 3-pointer rolled in with 10.9 seconds left. "It really kind of gets them off guard," Holiday said. "Sometimes when they celebrate like that, well go right back down in 2 or 3 seconds. Thats definitely big for us." Davis then forced LaMarcus Aldridge into a tough shot from the baseline that bounced off the top of the backboard and came after the buzzer anyway. "I thought they were going to try to give him the ball and hit a jump shot," Davis said. "I just tried to play good defence on him and put my hands up and make him shoot real high." Lillard scored 29 points and Aldridge had 28 for Portland (24-7), which lost its second straight. "Its a lot of stuff," Lillard said. "This was just a game that we couldnt pull out our best abilities. We just need to learn from this game and use it in a way to win our next one." Holiday answered every Portland challenge down the stretch. When the Blazers scored the first seven points of the fourth to tie the score at 89, he sank a 3-pointer. Holiday then hit an outside shot and a buzzer-beating driving bank to keep the Pelicans ahead 98-95. After Nicolas Batum missed a free throw that would have given Portland its first lead since 33-32 in the second quarter, Holiday sank a floater to make the score 100-98. After Aldridge missed an outside shot with the score tied at 100, Holiday sank one from just beyond the free throw line. "He was excellent in the fourth quarter," Evans said. "He was in control. Thats what hes here for." The Blazers, who have struggled defensively lately, allowed the Pelicans to hit 53.9 per cent of their shots. Portland entered having allowed an average of 111.8 points in its last four games. "There are a lot of causes," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "Its penetration, its not helping out one another, its transition." The Pelicans limited the Blazers to 44.3 per cent shooting, and Davis was a major factor. He blocked two fallaway attempts from Aldridge before stifling him on the final shot. The Pelicans dominated the first half statistically -- shooting 52.2 per cent to the Blazers 38.3 per cent and outrebounding them 28-19 -- so New Orleans 56-49 lead at the break felt as though it should have been larger. New Orleans outrebounded the Blazers 18-8 in the first quarter, had a 10-0 advantage in second-chance points and held Lillard to one basket. The Pelicans also committed only one turnover, yet were up only 26-21. That advantage disappeared quickly when Dorell Wright and Lillard sank consecutive 3-pointers to put Portland ahead 33-32 early in the second, but Evans scored six in a row to start a 12-0 New Orleans run. NOTES: Pelicans guard Eric Gordon missed his third consecutive game with a bruised right hip. ... Pelicans centre Jason Smith sat out with a left shoulder injury. He had missed three games with a bruised right knee before returning against Houston on Saturday. ... FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. NBA FINALS PREDICTION - Spurs in 7: A major percentage of folks are rooting for the Spurs - so am I - yet, I feel that when its all said and done, both of these teams are pretty even when you compare/contrast their strengths and weaknesses. I do think the Spurs have a preparation edge, having had to play the tougher competition all season on a more nightly basis in both the regular season and playoffs in the Western Conference, and it helps that theyve gone through the fire on a more consistent basis. The Heat have the better "Big 3" from a talent perspective and the best player on the planet in LeBron James. Tony Parkers health status concerns me for San Antonio. So many variables that you can toss around and argue over, which Ive done, but Im just going to go with my gut here and take the Spurs.  Last years series was terrific and I hope and think that this one will be even better. Enjoy! 2. RANDY WITTMAN (Wizards): A job well done in getting his team to the second round and figuring out how to win which led to a well deserved contract extension. This team was always a bit of a tease the past few years, yet Wittman pushed them to the next level and got nice buy in from them on how the game should be played. Now, they have to try and keep Marcin Gortat and Trevor Ariza who are both free agents. Regardless, I think the future is bright and on solid ground due to the leadership of Wittman. 3. CHANDLER PARSONS (Rockets): Houston has apparently declined to pick up the option on his contract. I love this guys game and hes still really improving. Parsons shoots it and plays with great energy and awareness. Hell be a restricted free agent and it will be interesting if they can make a run at another big free agent to team with Dwight Howard and James Harden and then try to match Parsonss offer sheet that hell surely get in the open market. Hes a guy that I consider a glue guy who you can win with and has lots of value because he backs it up with production as well. Its going to be a delicate situation to navigate for GM Daryl Morey and coach Kevin McHale with an important piece of the puzzle. Im quite curious to see how it unfolds. 4. JEFF BOWER (Pistons): Stan Van Gundy hired him as his GM and I really like this hire. Ive known Jeff for over 25 years and hes a good basketball man. Hes paid his dues as a NCAA Div. 1 assistant and head coach and has spent a great deal of time in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets, as well as their move to New Orleans, as their assistant and head coach, scout, assistant GM and finally GM. He knows all the ins and outs of the business and is someone that Van Gundy can trust to handle the front office responsibilities for him. Van Gundy will have final say on all basketball matters, but you need someone to look after lots of details while youre busy coaching. This really makes sense to me. 5. LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE (Blazers): Aldridge was named to All-NBA Third Team today, but I really feel he should be on Second Team ahead of Kevin Love at the power forward spot. I strongly believe that winning should and does matter. You could argue that Aldridge has a little better supporting cast in Portland, yet when I give the eye test, I see Aldridge perform consistently at a high level against all competition and I see Love as a guy who gets nice numbers within the structure of the game, but Im still just a bit skeptical about what he brings to the table in terms of competitive production in the major moments of the game. I think Aldridge is a Second teamer and Love is a Third. Just my opinion, but winning has to mean something.  Antoine Cason Womens Jersey . LONDON, Ont. -- London Knights goaltender Anthony Stolarz has been suspended eight games for swinging his stick at the head of Windsor Spitfires forward Josh Ho-Sang, the Ontario Hockey League team announced Wednesday. Should two-time defending champion London wrap up its first round series on Thursday night, Stolarz could miss the entire second round of playoffs. In the first period of Londons incident-filled 10-2 victory in Game 3 on Tuesday night, Ho-Sang jabbed his stick at the goaltender after a play at the net. As the Spitfires star skated away, Stolarz took a one-handed swing with his stick and hit Ho-Sung on the back of the head. The Knights said the suspension was for a "stick infraction." Stolarz, a 2012 second round puck of the Philadelphia Flyers, was given a surprisingly lenient minor penalty for high-sticking. "I apologize for my actions on Tuesday night," Stolarz said Wednesday in a statement. "Its an unfortunate situation and in no way did I intend to injure my opponent, Joshua Ho-Sang." Stolarz was not the only goalie to cause a stir. After allowing eight goals, Windsors Dalen Kuchmey skated off the ice during a TV time out with 5:34 left in the second period and didnt return. Later, coach Bob Boughner said Kuchmey "quit on his team and quit on his teammates." Boughner said he left Kuchmey in the game because regular starter Alex Fotinos was sick and would only act as backup. Fotinos then went into the game and allowed Londons final two goals. The Windsor Star reported that Kuchmey apologized to his teammates but did not intend to return to the team. He said he was embarrassed in front of the fans by being left in for so many goals. He had indicated after the sixth goal that he wanted to come out of the game. PAUL, Minn.ST. LOUIS -- Matt Adams might want to have his fathers visit last longer. Adams homered for the third straight game -- all with his father in attendance -- and Matt Holliday also went deep, helping the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-2 victory and series sweep Sunday over the Washington Nationals. Adams gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run shot on an 0-2 pitch, his sixth homer of the season. Adams father, Jamie, has been visiting from Pennsylvania on Fathers Day weekend. "Unfortunately, hes going to go home," Adams said. There were going to meet before Adams father left for the airport. "He might give me a big hug and start crying," Adams said. "Hes an emotional guy." Adams has homered in all three games since coming off the disabled list with a torn calf muscle. Holliday put St. Louis up 3-0 in the third with his fifth home run. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny never doubted his sluggers would start to hit the long ball after a slow start. The Cardinals are last in the National League in homers. "Weve been saying for months now these guys have done that," Matheny said. "Its not a surprise. Its not like these guys have never hit any home runs in their lives. I think that everybody just thought that we were either brainwashing them not to hit home runs or else they all lost it collectively and both of them are ridiculous." Last year, Adams had 17 homers in 108 games and Holliday had 22 in 141 games. "We knew that our power didnt go anywhere," Adams said. "We knew the type of hitters we are. We go out there on daily basis and grind through our at-bats." Jaime Garcia (3-0) pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and a run for St. Louis. He struck out six and walked two. Trevor Rosenthal got the final out for his 20th save. Washingtons Doug Fister (5-2) had his five-start winning streak snapped. He pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. "The two home runs were the biggest things for me," Fister said. "I need to find a better effort." St. Louis has won 12 of the last 14 regular-season meetings with Washington. The Nationals are 2-18 in the newest version of Busch Stadium. "We have a bitter taste in our mouths going home," Nationals outfielder Scott Hairston said. &"I think we definitely didnt play up to our capabilities.dddddddddddd" The Nationals loaded the bases in three innings, stranded 10 runners and scored on two bases loaded walks. The timely hit didnt come for Washington. "Its the ebbs and flows of the game," Washington manager Matt Williams said. "Its that time of the year where heavy legs start to set in a little bit." Garcia pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second. Third baseman Matt Carpenter caught Sandy Leons grounder on a short hop and threw out Hairston at home. Garcia then struck out Fister. Jayson Werth drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1. "I didnt have my best stuff today but at the same time you go out there and you compete," Garcia said. "You battle and you keep your team in the game." St. Louis got the run back in the fifth, when Kolton Wong snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Holliday, who has 999 RBIs in his career. Craig doubled home Holliday in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. Rosenthal walked pinch-hitter Adam LaRoche in the ninth with the bases loaded to make it 5-2. Alabama has held the top ranking in college football since the preseason, but this week, they face their biggest test of the season in the fourth-ranked Auburn Tigers. The two largest public universities in the state of Alabama have a rivalry that extends back to 1893 when they played the first installment of the Iron Bowl. The Alabama Crimson Tide have not lost since November 10, 2012, including all 11 of their games this season, and faced few challenges along the way. The top-ranked team has won all but one game by more than 12 points; a 49-42 victory over then sixth-ranked Texas A&M in their second game of the season. Alabama is the unquestioned best team in college football, winning their games by an average of 30.4 points. Despite being 10-1, Auburn is a very different story as the highest ranked team without a perfect record. Auburns lone loss came on September 21 against LSU, a team Alabama beat 38-17 and they boast the second best rushing offence in the NCAA, averaging just over 320 yards per game on the ground. However, Auburn has looked far from perfect this season. Narrow wins over Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Texas A&M had many people questioning the teams rank (7) entering their Week 12 matchup against No. 25 Georgia and the Tigers failed to put those questions to bed. After being outscored by the Bulldogs 21-3 in the fourth quarter, they found themselves down 38-37 facing 4th-and-18 with just 36 seconds left on the clock. Then, quarterback Nick Marshall threw a Hail Mary pass in to Georgias prevent-defence. Playing in double coverage, Georgia safeties Josh Harvey-Clemons and Tray Matthews both attempted to make a play on the ball but the two collided and knocked the ball into the air.  As the two defensive backs fell to the ground, Auburn wide receiver Ricardo Louis grabbed the ball out of mid-air and ran untouched into the end zone to give Auburn a miracle victory. Two weeks later, Auburn hosts their in-state rivals coming off a bye week and sitting at a season-high fourth place in the BCS rankings. Alabama has won two straight BCS National Championship games and a win against Auburn will put the team an SEC championship game victory away from playing for a third straight title. Auburn last defeated Alabama in 2010, en route to winning the second national championship in the schools history. Though the odds are in favour of Alabama, can Auburn continue their magical season and dethrone the Crimson Tide from the nations top seed? As always, its Your! Call. Brian Hartline Womens Jersey . Jason Kidd isnt half-bad against them, either. Pierce scored 17 of his 29 points in the third quarter and delivered two crucial scores late, Shaun Livingston created a turnover on the games final play and the Brooklyn Nets topped the Heat 96-95 on Wednesday night -- moving to 3-0 this season against the two-time defending NBA champions, two of those wins coming by a single point and the other in overtime. "We havent had any success," Kidd said of Brooklyns perfect mark against the Heat. "Weve just been lucky to win some games." Maybe, maybe not. In Kidds past 24 games against the Heat as a coach or player, his teams are 19-5. And this was just the latest entry in Brooklyns surge, with the Nets now an Eastern Conference-best 23-9 since Jan. 1. Mirza Teletovic scored 17 off the bench. Livingston finished with 13 points and Andray Blatche scored 11 for the Nets. Chris Bosh scored 24 points for Miami, giving him 15,003 for his career. Dwyane Wade scored 22, LeBron James finished with 19 and Mario Chalmers scored 14 for the Heat, who gave up 22 points off turnovers and were hit with two technicals (on Wade and Chalmers) for arguing calls within a 92-second span of the third quarter. "Its competition," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team has dropped four of its past five games. "Its survival of the strongest right now. ... We still feel confident about our game. We just need to put it together." Miami had a chance at the end. Deron Williams missed a jumper with about 8 seconds left, and Wade grabbed the rebound. He took a couple steps downcourt, then called time out with 3.5 seconds remaining, and Miami had to burn another one in order to advance the ball into the frontcourt for the final play. Whatever Spoelstra drew up never got off the ground. Bosh tried to get the ball to James in the lane, but Livingston knocked it away and time expired. "Losing four of five," James said, "thats pretty bad." Pierce was 5 for 5 from the field, 3 for 3 from 3-point range and got fouled on another try from beyond the arc in the third quarter, his biggestt-scoring period of the season.dddddddddddd. "Im sure his antenna is raised in games like this, against us," Spoelstra said. Chalmers made a 3-pointer to get Miami within 84-81 with 6:57 left, but Teletovic -- who hadnt had a double-digit scoring game in exactly a month before Wednesday -- answered from several feet beyond the arc on the next Brooklyn possession to restore a six-point lead. Miami never got the lead back. Pierce had a 3 to make it 90-86, then a drive to snap a 92-all tie with 1:45 remaining. "Pauls got too much left in the tank to be a role player," Williams said. The Nets were without Kevin Garnett (back) and Andrei Kirilenko (ankle). Garnett is expected to miss at least one more game, while Kirilenko tested his ankle in a morning shootaround practice before the Nets figured he wasnt ready to play. Miami beat every other team in the league last season, and still could repeat the feat this year. The Heat entered Wednesday having beaten 26 of the 29 opposing clubs, the three holdouts being Houston (who visits Sunday), Memphis (who Miami hasnt faced yet) -- and the Nets, who won the first two meetings against the Heat this season in Brooklyn. Now theyve won in Miami as well, and are 31-1 when leading after three quarters. "If we had the answer, we would have won," James said. The Heat fell two games behind Indiana in the East race, as well as one game behind the Pacers in the loss column. It was also the fifth straight game where Miami failed to shoot better than 50 per cent from the field, and the Nets kept James from getting any shots from the field in the fourth quarter. "We do need to execute down the stretch," Wade said. "We need to be able to at least get the ball up to the rim, so were going to have to work on that a little bit. Weve got something to work on as a team. Thats not a bad thing." NOTES: James took a pair of free throws 3:07 into the game. He didnt take any in games earlier this week against Chicago and Washington. ... Joe Johnson had a 22-point first quarter against Miami in January; he was held to eight Wednesday. ... Its amazing the fans werent speechless over what they were witnessing. It wasnt merely that the Los Angeles Lakers had blown a 21-point, second-half lead to the lowly Washington Wizards -- it was the fact that the Lakers had essentially lost the game to a bunch of Wizards second-stringers. It truly is almost surreal what happened in the fourth quarter of the Wizards 106-101 victory Wednesday. Kevin Seraphin scored 10 of his career-high 14 points. Roger Mason hit three huge 3-pointers. Nick Young, who usually passes the ball only with great reluctance, had four of his career-high six assists. Trevor Booker, the only starter to see significant minutes, grabbed eight of his career-high 17 rebounds. Also, Kobe Bryant, who seemingly could do whatever he wanted in the first half, went 1 for 10 in the final period to finish with an unfulfilling 30 points. Conclusion: Its safe to say that the Lakers thought they had it won when they were leading 76-55 in the third quarter. "I was out there kind of loafing around and having a good time," said Andrew Bynum, who scored 19 points but committed seven turnovers. "They played up, got the home crowd into it, and they were able to hit shots." The Wizards will take it. They hadnt beaten the Lakers since 2006, a streak of nine straight losses. The same team that was called "unprofessional" by coach Randy Wittman after a 20-point loss to Golden State on Monday somehow pulled off a minor miracle. "When our backs are against the wall," Young said, "you cant do nothing but go up." Young finished with 19 points, and those half-dozen assists were indeed out of the norm for someone with only 38 in his first 36 games, causing him to joke that he had become "a complete player." Booker scored 18 points, and Seraphin shot 7 for 8 and tied his career high with nine rebounds. Mason finished with 14 points, and John Wall had nine assists to help make up for four points on 1-for-8 shooting.dddddddddddd The bench tallied 55 points. "A lot of us," Mason said, "are hungry to play." Pau Gasol added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers, who dropped both ends of a road back-to-back. Bryant said the team "played a little tired" after an overtime loss at Detroit the night before, and on Wednesday he wasnt saying much of anything. How surprised were you that you were up 21 and you lost? "Shocked." How disappointed? "Very." "Ill keep it to one word," Bryant then said. The Wizards were their usual disjointed selves well into the third quarter, mixing dunks with misfired alley-oops and other failed attempts at flash. Jordan Crawford and Young were both 0 for 4 from 3-point range in the first half, and Wall didnt have a point until his dunk with 3:19 remaining in the third. Young had a classic Wizards blooper in the second quarter, going up for an uncontested dunk only to have the ball slip out of his hands and fly over the backboard and into the rows of fans seated behind the basket. The deficit was 21 when the Wizards started on a 26-7 run that pulled them within two at the end of the third quarter. Mason started the fourth by hitting a pair of 3s, and Seraphin twice gave Washington back the lead after the Lakers had rallied. Seraphins dunk -- Washingtons 10th of the game -- and Youngs jumper put the underdogs ahead 104-99 with 43 seconds left. After a dunk by Gasol, Booker grabbed an offensive rebound on Walls missed jumper to keep the Lakers at bay. The Wizards made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to help seal the improbable win. "Our mindset right now to play on the road," Lakers coach Mike Brown said, "is not what it should be." Notes: Bryant wore a clear mask to protect his broken nose. Its a strong relationship. Both have fiery personalities and arent afraid to show it. Saviano was not available for comment after practice while Bouchard, as is custom with tennis players, did not meet with the media on a non-match day. Several veteran journalists said that while this was an unusual exchange between player and trainer, especially considering the timing, but there is no way of knowing what impact, if any, this will have on Bouchards psyche. But if there is one thing Bouchard has shown in her still young professional career, its that she seems to show tremendous poise under fire. Edmonton Oilers 6 Winnipeg Jets 2 - The Oilers scored three unanswered goals in the third period for the win on Monday, as they snapped a six-game losing streak while handing the Jets their second straight road loss and dropping them two games below .500 on the season. The Jets are now 0-5-1 in the second game of back-to-backs. The game started the same way the Vancouver game started the night before, with the Jets taking the first two penalties of the game and killing off the first, but the Oilers getting on the board first, scoring on the second man-advantage. It was Jordan Eberle with the goal. Mark Stuart with his second from Olli Jokinen and Devin Setoguchi tied it less than three minutes later, but poor defensive zone coverage resulted in a Sam Gagner goal and a 2-1 Edmonton lead after one. The Oilers outshot the Jets 14-7. If not for great goaltending by Ondrej Pavelec, the score would have been much worse. The Jets were much better to start the second and controlled the play. The Jets power play connected for the ninth time in eight games to tie the game. Andrew Ladd snapped an eight game goalless stretch by deflecting a Dustin Byfuglien miss fire. A great play by Brian Little to enter the zone started the play. Little snapped a season-high three-game pointless stretch with the assist. But at 16:40, again poor defensive zone coverage led to a David Perron goal to regain the lead for Edmonton after two periods. The Jets outshot the Oilers 10-7 in the second. Early in the third, the Jets went back to the power play and came close to tying the game with a Blake Wheeler shot going off the cross bar. Seconds after the power play expired, Jeff Petry came in from the right point unnoticed and made it 4-2. Taylor Hall made it 5-2 at 8:34 with the Oilers second power play goal of the game. After a clean hit by Stuart on Yakupov, Luke Gazdic went after Stuart to start some of the rough stuff with lots more to come. Yakupov made it 6-2 and the fireworks were on. Earlier in the game, Yakupov made contact with Pavelec. Andrew Ladd after the game saying "I wasnt happy he threw a forearm at our goalies head. That was pretty much it." After the goal, Byfuglien got a minor for slashing Yakupov. On the ensuing face-off, Yakupov and Ladd exchanged slashes; Ladd got his stick into the stomach of Yakupov and that brought everyone into it. Zach Bogosian ended up with two Oilers, as the Jets were down a man with Byfuglien in the penalty box. Somehow here were the penalties when all was said and done. Yakupov got two for slashing and a 10-minute misconduct. For the Jets, Bogosian got a spearing major and a game misconduct, Little two for slashing and a misconduct, Ladd two for slashing, two for cross-checking and a game misconduct. The final penalty total in minutes was Jets 78, Oilers 25. Final shots 30-20 Oilers. The Jets were not happy with their performance. "Frustrating doesnt begin to describe it," stated captain Ladd. "Its the same (crap) game after game." "We didnt play very intelligent," added coach Claude Noel. "The way we played you knew the game was going to get out of hand and by opening it up against this team, we got what we deserved."The Jets next action is Friday at MTS Centre against Minnesota. WINNIPEG -- Marian Gaborik didnt get on the score sheet in his debut with the Los Angeles Kings, but he felt comfortable in a 3-1 victory Thursday over the Winnipeg Jets. Gaborik was acquired in a trade with Columbus on Wednesday and skated on the top line with centre Anze Kopitar and right-winger Justin Williams. "We created some things," said Gaborik, who logged 16:38 of ice time. "We had some good time on the power play as well. "We got some great help by our (defence) offensively as well so I think its going to get better and better." Mike Richards scored the game winner on a Winnipeg giveaway that helped run the Kings (36-22-6) winning streak to six games. "I was just as excited as a lot of the people that were here that came in from (my hometown) of Kenora (Ont.)," Richards said of the 20-plus game tickets he had to find. Captain Dustin Brown had Los Angeles first goal and Alec Martinez added a third-period power-play goal. Goalie Jonathan Quick only needed to make 17 saves for his 20th win of the season. Olli Jokinen notched his 15th goal of the season for Winnipeg (30-27-7) and a busy Ondrej Pavelec stopped 38 shots. "They move the puck well, they can spend a lot of time in your zone," Pavelec said. "We have to forget about this one and focus on the next one." Winnipeg and Phoenix were tied at 67 points heading into the game, one point behind Dallas for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Vancouver was one back of the Jets and Coyotes. Vancouver was visiting Dallas on Thursday night and Phoenix was hosting Montreal. "I liked the speed of the game that we started the game with," Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. "I thought we moved the puck sharp and we moved our feet. And then I thought we ran into the L.A. Kings. "When theyre at their best, they will take your game and frustrate you to the point that you start to change what youre trying to do because theres nothing given easily." The biggest cheer in the scoreless first period was for Jets forward Dustin Byfuglien, after he sent Kings defenceman Jake Muzzin over the boards into the bottom of Winnipegs bench. Los Angeles outshot the Jets 11-7 in the opening frame. Winnipeg didnt get its first shot of the second period until almost seven minutes in, but the Jets scored on their 11th of the game. Evander Kane went around Kings defenceman Drew Doughty and then beat Muzzin to the puck off the boards behind the net, sending a quick pass to Jokinen who shot the puck past Quick at 12:03. But the jubilation of the MTS Centre only lasted 42 seconds. Brown scored his 12th goal of the season after centre Jarret Stoll sent a long backhand pass across the front of the net that hit Browns skate and the puck trickled across the goal-line past Pavelec at 12:45. Then Jets defenceman Tobias Enstrom, at the boards by the Kings bench, made a pass across the ice that was supposed to be for Jokinen. Richards intercepted it halfway, crossed the blue-line and then fired a shot by Pavelec at 16:15 for his ninth of the season. Los Angeles also outshot the Jets 10-6 in the second. The Kings are now 19-0-0 this season when leading after the second period. With Jets forward Blake Wheeler in the penalty box for high-sticking, defenceman Martinez scored unassisted at 15:51 with a shot on Pavelecs blocker side. The Jets had to juggle all four lines from Tuesdays 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Islanders because of injuries. Winnipeg rookie centre Mark Scheifele sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during the loss. The second-line centre is out for at least four weeks and possibly the rest of the regular season. Forward Chris Thorburn was also injured in the game and is listed day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Those deletions made Maurice put his top line of Andrew Ladd, centre Bryan Little and Wheeler back together. Jokinen was centring the second line with Kane and Byfuglien. Michael Frolik, whos only played a few games at centre during his six-year NHL career, was put in the middle with Matt Halischuk and Devin Setoguchi. The fourth line was centred by Jim Slater with Eric Tangradi and Anthony Peluso. Winnipeg hosts Ottawa on Saturday afternoon and the Kings play in Edmonton Sunday. dallas mavericks Parsons Jersey . Chandler Parsons Jersey .Y. -- The NFL says the number of concussions in practices and games in the preseason and regular season dropped 13 per cent from 2012 to 2013.WASHINGTON -- If Trevor Ariza can hit every 3-pointer he takes, if four starters can routinely score 20 points, if Marcin Gortat can keep asserting him as an inside scoring threat, and, well, if the opponent is always the Orlando Magic, the Washington Wizards will do just fine without Nene. In their first game since their Brazilian big mans latest injury, the Wizards took advantage of a favourable opponent and showed they know how to win without him. John Wall had 27 points and seven assists, Trevor Ariza scored 22 points by making all five of his 3s, and Gortat added 21 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday night in a 115-106 win over the Magic. "I automatically tried to put myself in the situation to score," said Gortat, who was 9 for 13 from the field. "I yell to John. Sometimes hes going to yell back at me, then I would just say, Hey, Nenes not here. This is what Ive got to do to lead this team, help this team inside, and Im going to run to the block and demand the ball, and I believe Im capable of doing it." Bradley Beal added 21 points, giving Washington four 20-point scorers for the first time since April 6, 2010. The Wizards have won a season-high four in a row to move one game above .500. They also improved to 2-6 this season without the pivotal but oft-injured Nene, who sprained the MCL in his left knee Sunday in a win at Cleveland and is expected to miss six weeks. Victor Oladipo scored 26 points and Nikola Vucevic added 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Magic, who tied a single-season franchise record by losing their 16th consecutive road game. They remain without leading scorer Arron Afflalo, who missed his second game with a sprained right ankle. "We scored," Vucevic said. "We just couldnt get stops, and you cant do that on the road." In case there was any thought that Nenes injury would give the Wizards a convenient excuse to miss the post-season for the sixth straight year, owner Ted Leonsis began the day with a wakeup call via his blog, posting "Our goals have not changed in any way" and the team must overcome injuries and "whatever else comes our way." Leonsis has made it cleaar that another year in the NBA lottery would not be acceptable.dddddddddddd The Wizards sit in fifth place in the weak Eastern Conference, and coach Randy Wittman and team president Ernie Grunfeld are both in the last season of their contracts. The Wizards are 60-61 when Nene plays and 9-34 when he doesnt since he was acquired in a trade two years ago. Washington also played Tuesdays game without forward Kevin Seraphin, who has a sore right knee. For the players, Leonsis message was hardly necessary. Theyre also tired of having the season end in mid-April. "If youre an All-Star and those type of players, youve got to step up and take on a bigger role," said Wall, who played in his first All-Star game this month. "And thats a situation Im willing to accept and do. ... Just having that energy that I have when play good against those other good point guards, to do it on a consistent basis, thats something I really have to step up to another level with Nene being out." The only starter in single digits was Nenes fill-in, Trevor Booker, who had three points and seven rebounds. The team planned to sign Drew Gooden to a 10-day contract in time for the next game, Thursday against the Toronto Raptors. The Wizards led for nearly the entire game, but it was never a blowout. Washington had a 17-point lead in the second and third quarters, but Oladipo and Vucevic led an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to six late in the third. The Magic got as close as eight in the final period, but Ariza got a fortuitous bounce on a 3-pointer to restore a comfortable lead. "I guess Ive been living right, doing the right things," Ariza said. "The shot clock was running down. It hit the front of the rim, I think it hit the backboard and went in, so its all good." NOTES: Orlando had no fast-break points. ... The Magic also lost 16 road games in a row in a single season in early 2006. The franchise record over more than one season is 17 -- the final 12 road games of last season and the first five of this season. ... The Magic had two new faces on the bench.
